Following a competitive tender, Midland Metro has awarded Cordant Cleaning a three year contract to provide a range of services across its tram network in Birmingham. The tram franchise was previously operated by National Express who Cordant had successfully partnered for the past five years, and was taken over by Midland Metro earlier this year.
Under the terms of the multi million-pound deal, Cordant Cleaning will operate 24/7 with an initial remit for the cleaning of the current infrastructure which includes 24 trams, three car parks, 26 tram stops and depot. A specialist team will be responsible for walking the 21-kilometre tram route that runs between Birmingham and Wolverhampton collecting approximately 20 bags of general rubbish each day, in addition to items such as mattresses and TVs.
The company will also support Midland Metro’s plans to transform from a single line to a network that is three times larger, with over 80 stops serving more than 20 transport interchanges and linking Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Dudley, Brierley Hill, Digbeth, North Solihull, Birmingham Airport, the NEC and HS2.
It’s an exciting time for the region as ambitious plans for growth and regeneration begin to be delivered with the City of Culture and Commonwealth Games taking place in 2021 and 2022. The Metro will play an important role and plan to grow from a business carrying eight million passengers per year to one with 30 million passengers by 2030.
